  1. Did you know...German Shepherds are a German breed (duh), but used to actually be known in the UK as an Alsatian. The term became popular in the early 20th century as the word "German" had a negative connation in connection to the World Wars. When the breed was first developed, the Alsace region of France where the dogs were quite popular, was actually part of Germany. Hence the name "Alsatian"

  2. How smart are German Shepherds? In short, VERY! They are routinely ranked as one of the top 3 smartest breeds of dogs. According to Stanley Coren and his "Intelligence of Dogs" book, German Shepherds can often learn a command after the first time being taught it...amazing!

  3. German Shepherds are quite susceptible to heat, especially the long hair version. If you have a German and live anywhere with heat and humidity, be sure to provide plenty of shade and cool, fresh water. German Shepherds like to be outside but it's up to us to make sure they stay cool and safe

  4. Rin Tin Tin is probably the most famous German Shepherd and even one of the most famous dogs in general. Did you know that he was rescued from a nearly destroyed shelter in France during World War I, brought back to Los Angeles, and trained by his rescuer into the superstar known as Rin Tin Tin

  5. There is a newer breed called a Czechoslovakian Vlcak, that is a cross between a German Shepherd and a Carpathian Wolf! While originally trained for use by the Czech Special Forces, they are now used in search and rescue, herding, and other common German Shepherd activities
